Reviews are in!!!

Thanks Blue Curtains Brisbane: Stories From The Stalls

For all of its cleverness and moments of vulnerability, there is no getting away from the grit at the core of the show’s critique of traditional Australian masculinity. The manner in which directors Fa’alafi and Shelton have crafted together this slick, multi-layered and complex work is to be commended and celebrated because “Demolition” both blows up the system and builds up the community in balance.

These reviews giving us life!!!

Critiquing the Arts – POC Edition from Nothing Ever Happens In Brisbane in the words of Katie Rasch!!

“The importance of solidarity really stuck with me and I felt like I was being shown an inclusive version of sisterhood that I could really relate to. This was no highly sanitised mainstream girlboss sisterhood, but the kind of solidarity that can be difficult and gritty and requires you to show up for other people and do the work.”

We can’t contain our excitement to have had Demolition part of the Critiquing the Arts Bris Fest - POC edition from Nothing Ever Happens In Brisbane

To have reviews written by our community instead of the usual “arts reviewers” is a breath of fresh air. The intended layers and nuance of the show is both seen, heard and actually experienced on a personal level therefore our work truely feels understood.

Thank you Saskia Sassen for this beautiful review.

“The stars of the show unite all those in attendance with moments of interacting with the crowd, through call and response which is a powerful reminder of solidarity and a call for action which first starts with ourselves and the community. As a Pasifika, Queer Non Binary Person this type of energy and inclusion for all minorities is impactful and refreshing, seeing yourself on stage commanding respect makes the message of the show even more encouraging to love your truth!”

Reviews coming in.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Broadway World

Polytoxic's awe inspiring and highly topical Demolition is not only a sensational expression of the power of sisterhood for all the women out there, but acts as a deeply necessary "in your face" reminder for men to have a long, hard think about their actions and who they affect. Let's go tear down the system.

Another review from Nothing Ever Happens In Brisbane this time from Hope One

It’s hard to really describe how exciting this POC edition of reviews are for us!! To have our work critiqued by people who can relate to all aspects of the show is truely incredible.

“This work left me feeling seen on so many levels - as a Queer non-binary person struggling to fit the status quo, as a Maori woman who wasn’t raised on her Marae or Ancestral lands, as a Mother realising the importance of embracing culture for your children’s future, as a woman being surrounded by the constant pressures of living up to the patriarchal structure and never feeling good enough. I felt uplifted, hopeful, powerful and full of rage. Most of all, I felt like the many layers to my being were being reflected on stage in front of me in the theatre, which isn’t always the choice of venue when seeking queer black and brown stories. If you love works such as Hot Brown Honey or Apocalipstick, this is a show you do not want to miss.” - Hope One

This incredible review from Nothing Ever Happens In Brisbane in the words of Ofa Fanaika!!

Demolition slices into the trickiness with a sharpened wit into topics like Consent, De-colonisation, Stolen Land and just trying to get home safely at night. Demolition left me nourished, made me feel visible, and I got great delight at the imagined white middle class male audience leaving full albeit being force fed, and about freakin’ time!

Audience responses!!

Demolition is absolutely mind blowing
- Reuben Kayne.

Saw Polytoxic’s Demolition. Have never more desperately wanted to hear every private post-show convo of an audience. You cheer, scream, and shout. But, there’s a whisper. A question. Gets louder after the show. It’s a work of pure entertainment, undergirded by absolute horror.
- MJ O’Neil

The first Polytoxic show I saw was The Rat Trap (it was amazing) in 2012 and these powerhouses have been changing the game ever since. There newest show Demolition is on until Saturday - do yourself a favour, book a ticket. It’s amazing! Huge props to Leah Shelton and Lisa Fa'alafi for being the creative geniuses that the world needs right now 😍
- Stephen Quinn

Y’all need to make time to see this masterpiece if a show!! - Josh Collins

This was an absolute banger show!

Our audiences giving us some love.

You'll find yourself laughing and whooping and then, suddenly, examining what made you laugh and — just as quickly — weeping or raging. The performers make a lot of noise in this show — after all, it's circus! — but I've never heard the scream, the cry, the yawp deployed with such power and nuance. - Zenobia Frost

This is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. It’s complex and layered and nuanced and sexy AF. - Lenine Bourke

From the staging to aerial work, musical numbers, tight choreography, costumes along with the artistry of the performers, Demolition is a stunning show that I really got in the feels about too. I found myself quite emotional several times and applaud the ladies for not only speaking truth to power through their art, but for laying themselves bare also. - Yvette Walker

Demolition is a beautifully made show. Heartachingly so. It is a visual and sonic feast. Full of joyous dance numbers. It has layers of metaphors that shows that Polytoxic and the cast a masterful story tellers. - Andrea Lam

That was insane and utterly gutterly important.
Just no words to describe how raw that left me. Fantastic. - Claire Stasse

I watched Demolition @ Powerhouse, it was fucking INSANE! A front row look into the pain, joy, struggle and nuances of living as a woman, trans woman & Indigenous woman under the current Patriachal, colonial system. Powerful Intersectional work once again by Polytoxic. - Hope Haami

Demolition is absolutely mind blowing. - Reuben Kayne.

Safety Officers Danger Zone and Jack Hammer ready to take you through the drills!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cold and early hit the traffic
changing frequency in transit
Time to shift the paradigm
Come ON team!
No better time
We are the constant hard solution
We’re the workers, lets get moving
Listen up, you need the brief
Now come on People move your feet
Smash this foundation
So much work to run this nation
Got the order? See the vision?
Now it’s time for Demolition
Lets build these walls made tougher
So it’s steady strong with colour
Got the order? Know the mission?
Now it’s time for Demolition

In building DEMOLITION, we wanted to create a work that was both a wild reclamation of space and an exploration of the invisible safety work that so many women, femmes, non-binary, trans and marginalised people undertake on the daily (that feeling of walking home alone at night with keys in one hand, phone in the other; of being catcalled; of taking the long way home; of being racially profiled; of smiling and being nice).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this time of chaos and uncertainty, we want this work to feel like a breath of fresh air. We are in a time where people everywhere are screaming “Enough is Enough”. We want to add our voices to this throng and share our diverse perspectives, stories and experiences.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We want to dare to imagine the future we know we want - a brave new post-pandemic world that is inclusive, intersectional and multi-layered.

We want our Audience to feel fired up to make change, to use their voices to call out unsafe behaviour, to stand up for inequality, to build a new normal that listens both to the World First Nations people and the needs of our planet. Sounds big we know, but in a global pandemic where the paradigm is shifting, what better time is there to burn the old system down!!! - Polytoxic

ZAYAH BOND @zayah_bris

Hi I am Zaya bond, a 23 yr old, non binary Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am currently living in Brisbane and have been performing as a drag performer for over three years. I’m also a part of a vogue house, The House of Alexander and drag house, The House of Thicc. Through these two houses I’ve met a lot of people I now call family and always enjoy working and performing with them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m also working on transforming one of my favourite hobbies, styling wigs and headpieces into a business opportunity so I can get paid for doing what I love and what helps me get creative. I’ve always enjoyed doing it and helping people get the style they’re after is a lot of fun.
